Woven Theatre presents Gainsborough and the Modern Woman. In 1760, Gainsborough painted a portrait of Ann Ford, which took his world by storm. Prepared to break the rules about how a woman should be portrayed, this painting was a cause of outrage but put a seal on Gainsborough’s growing reputation. Ann was a talented musician, determined to become an independent woman in a world where this was not accepted. Her father had her arrested twice to prevent her but she succeeded and earned a substantial amount of money. The play is about the making of this painting and the relationship between painter and subject, a very personal and exploratory process which reveals their place in history and the creation of a masterpiece. Come to the play and enter the world of Gainsborough and this extraordinary young woman.
