Fressingfield Tudor Event
The sun shone on the Tudors in Fressingfield on Bank Holiday weekend. The village celebrated 500 years of the building of the guildhall, now the Fox and Goose, and hundreds of villagers and visitors dressed up in costume to transform the centre of the village and turn back the clock to Tudor times.
On the Friday night there were lectures in the church on the building of the guildhall and Reformation and Revolution, followed by delightful madrigals by the Fressingfield Singers.
On the Saturday the Fox and Goose car park became a Tudor market and vegetables, herbs, pies, crafts and commemorative tankards were amongst the wares sold. There was music and dance throughout the day, including maypole dancing by the schoolchildren, pottage, bread and salad for lunch, archery and falconry on Church Farm Meadow, farm animals, craft activities and demonstrations of traditional skills.
On Sunday morning, all churches joined together to celebrate Fressingfield and give thanks for the past, present and future. The May Queen processed from the church to be crowned by a young Henry VIII on the green. There was morris dancing, lots more music, a hog roast for lunch and a Tudor drama in the afternoon. Commemorative embroideries now hang in the church and Sancroft Hall and there were historical exhibits and displays of the children's 'Tudor' work.
Thanks to all who took part, too many to mention, and to the funders who helped make it all possible.
